REAR ADMIRAL (UH) İZZET ARTUNÇ
COMMANDANT OF THE TURKISH COAST GUARD
 

Rear Admiral (UH) İzzet ARTUNÇ, 13th Commandant of the Turkish Coast Guard Command, was born in Tavas/DENİZLİ on January 26th, 1953. He is a 1970 graduate of the Turkish Naval High School. Then he graduated from the Turkish Naval Academy in 1973 with the rank of “Ensign”.

Following the Officer Basic Specialization Course between 1973-1974, he attended the Submarine Officer Specialization Course and “On the Job Training (OJT)” between 1974-1975 and become a submariner.

 As for the operational sea duty assignments; he served as a submariner trainee on board of TCG BURAKREİS, as the communication officer of TCG ÇANAKKALE, as the weapons officer of TCG ATILAY, the executive officer of TCG CERBE and TCG SALDIRAY. Also, he served as Commanding Officer of TCG SALDIRAY, between 1988-1989. Subsequently, he was assigned as Chief Of Staff (COS) of the Turkish Submarine Group Command between 1998-1999 and as Commodore of the Submarine Division I between 1999-2000.

As for the ashore duty assignments; he served as Chief of Communication-Electronics and Information Systems (CIS) Infrastructure Section in NAVSOUTH HQ-ITALY between 1990-1993, as Chief of the Communication Planning Section of CIS Department in the Turkish Naval Forces Command (TNFC) HQ between 1993-1996, as Chief of the National Strategy Section of General Plans and Policy Department in the Turkish General Staff (TGS) HQ between 1996-1998, as Chief of Research and Development (R&D) Department in TNFC HQ between 2000-2002.

Rear Admiral ARTUNÇ attended post graduate studies at the Naval Post Graduate School-Monterey, CA/USA between 1977-1980 and graduated with “Master of Science in Electronics Engineering (MSEE)” degree. Also, he attended post graduate studies at the La Verne University-Naples/ITALY between 1990-1993 and graduated with “Master of Science in Management (MBA)” degree. Additionally, he graduated from the Naval War College (İstanbul) in 1986, from the Armed Forces College (İstanbul) in 1989 and from the National Security College (Ankara) in 2003, respectively.

Rear Admiral ARTUNÇ was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (LH) on August 30th, 2002, after which he was assigned as Chief of R&D in TNFC HQ between 2002-2005 and Commander of the Turkish Submarine Group between 2005-2006.

Rear Admiral ARTUNÇ was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (UH) on August 30th, 2006 and was assigned as Chief of Logistics in TNFC HQ between 2006-2009.

Rear Admiral (UH) İzzet ARTUNÇ became the Commandant of Turkish Coast Guard on August 07th, 2009.

Rear Admiral İzzet ARTUNÇ is married to Mrs. Esra ARTUNÇ and has a son (Kağan) and a daughter (İrem). He speaks English as a foreign language.
